New Northern: Ensuring the future of big band development in Preston

In the second of our New Northern spotlight features we hear from promoter Paul Rigby.
Paul applied to New Northern with his proposal of presenting a series of big band performances at The Continental in Preston. The Jazz North team were impressed by the way Paul’s events were designed to showcase talent both old and new and give aspiring big band musicians an opportunity to develop their craft.
“New Northern has given a much needed boost to the continuation and development of the big band event. It has even given us scope to go further afield to help cover the cost for transport. It has been great to have youth and university bands involved too, giving our young musicians a voice and being able to support them financially with their performance.
We have also looked at ways we can boost and entice new supporters and we’ve introduced an attendance incentive, encouraging music and non music lovers to enjoy Sunday afternoons and be entertained with some great music. Therefore our numbers are staying relatively high and we’ve even been able to add another month to this season's programme.” Paul Rigby
The next big band event at the Continental takes place on Sunday 4th May (doors open at 1.30pm for a 2pm show start) and features the Wigan Youth Jazz Orchestra.
Formed in 1976 by Wigan Metropolitan Borough Council, this multi-award winning band aims to train and develop the musical skills of its members through the performance of big band music from the 1930’s to the present day.
Tickets are £10 advance or £12 on the door (cash only). Under 11’s go free with an adult ticket holder. https://theconti.squarespace.com/events-list/the-wigan-youth-jazz-orchestra
